01. WELCOME TO THE NEW MEIJIFrom the ruins of a policy of control, self-expression bloomed, prospered, and took hold amongst the younger generations of the Japanese in the early decades of the 2000's; and now these youngsters are the ruling class, and things have shown no sign of slowing down. Once restricted simply to medical uses, biorobotics have become almost a cosmetic. The new plastic surgery. The city of Tokyo, always known for its unique expression of fashion and culture, has grown to become even more fantastic over the decades; its wilder districts in particular.
Feather implants, giving young girls hair entwined with the plumage of a thousand birds of paradise; eye transplants, with irises that change colour depending on their owners mood - these are just the most basic and noticeable of the body mods that have boomed in popularity. People have their phones built in to their arms, scales lining their skin, anything to be different, noticed, envied.
And hidden beneath this new circus of people who change themselves to be like monsters hide the real beasts; shadows of the underworld, who now blend in more than ever amongst the extravagance of the Tokyo nightlife. And they have rather more dangerous mods hiding beneath their skin. Where one would have their phone, they carry knives: instead of rainbow eyes, their lenses have been adapted to improve sight at night. In the minds of many, they are known as oniwabanshu, shinobi, ninja - and exist only in films and on TV.
But they are very real, and certain prominent figures of the Tokyo underground have started to... disappear. No one dares to say what's on everyone's mind, but with each sudden death, the lights of Tokyo's darkest districts begin to flicker. Is there more to the technology than a fashion gimmick?
